NIGERIA: FG TO REPLACE FOREIGNERS WITH NIGERIANS IN DIFFERENT SECTORS

The Director General/Chief Executive Officer of the Industrial Training Fund, Mr Joseph Ari on Thursday said the Federal Government had started the process of replacing foreigners occupying certain positions in some sectors in the country with Nigerians who had acquired skills for such jobs.
Ari disclosed this in an address he delivered at the flag off of the 2017 National Industrial Skills Development Programme, NISDP in Amawbia, Awka South Local Government Area of Anambra State.
Ari said, “It is worrisome that despite the number of Nigerians without work, several surveys, including those conducted by the ITF, have revealed that vacancies exist in some sectors of the economy that are currently being filled by persons other than Nigerians because of the lack of requisite technical skills of our people.
“It was with a view of arresting this problem which represents not only a clear and present danger but also threatens the attainment of key government policies that the ITF conceived the idea of NISDP.
“It is a programme aimed at instilling skills in our teeming population, particularly our young men and women, so as to escalate economic recovery and growth”.
Delivering the DG’s address, the Area Manager ITF, Awka, Mrs Chinwe Opara, said since inauguration, the programme had trained no fewer than 100,000 Nigerians in over 30 trades and crafts, adding that most of the beneficiaries had become great entrepreneurs and employers of labour.
She said training Nigerian youths to possess technical and vocational skills would stop foreigners from coming to the country to take up available jobs.
She asked the the trainees to utilise the opportunity to equip themselves with vocational skills to become employable and employers of labour.
Speaking on behalf of the state governor, Chief Willie Obiano, the state commissioner for youths and entrepreneurship, Dr Uju Nwogu, commended the federal government for its commitment in job creation and diversification of the economy as envisioned by by the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari.
She assured ITF of the Anambra State government’s willingness to partner it in the training and skill acquisition for the youths in the area.
Addressing the trainees, the officials of the Standards Organisation of Nigeria and the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control charged them to maintain standards in their products on graduation, stressing that quality was key to success

PARENTS OCCUPY CATALAN SCHOOLS AHEAD OF POLL

The Latest on Catalonia's plans to hold a referendum Sunday on breaking away from Spain (all times local) 8 p.m. Ruben Satinya wasn't sure he would vote in favor of independence for Catalonia in Sunday's disputed referendum, but the Spanish government's effort to prevent the poll from taking place has convinced him to vote in favor of a break with Spain. He is spending the night at his child's Congres-Indians school in Barcelona, hoping to be joined by many other activists before police are expected arrive at 6 a.m. Sunday to clear the school to keep it from being used as a voting station. Satinya doesn't expect police to forcibly take them out of the school if the crowd is large enough to make removals difficult. He says "I am Catalan, but my fight is for social and civil rights, and that is what this about." He adds "I believe in the basic right of self-determination." ——— 6:00 p.m. A grassroots group tha...
